Storage and handling of glass
Glass is a fragile material that requires careful handling and storage to prevent damage.
Receiving
- Inspect deliveries on arrival for any signs of damage.
- Report any damage immediately, before unloading.
- Use suitable lifting equipment for large or heavy units.
Storage
- Store glass in a dry, well-ventilated area, protected from rain and direct sunlight.
- Stack glass vertically on suitable racks or A-frames, with the panes leaning slightly backwards (5 to 7 degrees).
- Separate panes with cork pads or other interleaving material to prevent contact between panes and minimise the risk of marking.
- Do not store glass in contact with damp absorbent materials such as cardboard or paper.
- Protect glass from cement, plaster, welding sparks and any other potentially damaging materials.
Handling
- Always use appropriate PPE: gloves with cut resistance, safety glasses, safety footwear, and forearm protection.
- Carry panes on edge, not flat.
- Use vacuum lifters for large panes, in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
- Do not lift panes by the corners; support them along an edge.
- Plan the route before moving glass; ensure access is clear and the area is well lit.
On-site protection
Once installed, glass should be protected from damage by other trades until completion of the works. Avoid placing scaffolding, ladders or equipment in contact with the glass.
