Maintenance of glazed units
Insulating glass units require periodic cleaning and inspection to maintain their appearance and performance.
Cleaning
- Clean the glass regularly with clean water and a non-abrasive cloth or squeegee.
- Mild detergents may be used; avoid alkaline cleaners, abrasive products and metal scrapers.
- Avoid cleaning the glass in direct sunlight or when it is hot.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry to avoid streaking.
- Take care not to damage the perimeter seal of the unit.
Avoiding damage
- Do not allow alkaline materials (cement, plaster, mortar) to come into contact with the glass.
- Remove stickers and labels with care to avoid scratching the glass.
- Do not stick adhesive tape, paint or stickers directly to the glass.
- Do not allow welding sparks or hot metal fragments to come into contact with the glass.
Inspection
Periodic inspection of the glazing should include:
- checking the glazing gaskets or sealants for signs of deterioration
- checking the drainage and ventilation slots for blockages
- checking for any signs of seal failure (misting or condensation within the cavity)
- checking the frame for signs of movement or distortion.
