Protection

Protection of people and goods

Glass plays an important role in the protection of people and goods. Different types of glass offer different levels of protection. The selection depends on the level of risk and the protection required.

Safety glass

Safety glass is glass that, in case of breakage, reduces the risk of injury. There are two main types:

  • Toughened glass — when broken, fragments into small, relatively harmless granules.
  • Laminated glass — when broken, fragments adhere to the interlayer, preserving the integrity of the pane.

Security glass

Security glass is designed to delay an intruder or to resist deliberate attacks. Levels of security are graded according to the type and intensity of the attack the glass is intended to resist:

  • Anti-vandalism
  • Anti-burglary
  • Bullet-resistant
  • Blast-resistant

Fire-resistant glass

Fire-resistant glass forms a barrier against the passage of flames, smoke and, in some cases, radiated heat. It is classified by integrity (E), and integrity and insulation (EI). The time during which the glass continues to provide the rated protection (in minutes) is part of the classification, e.g. EI 30, EI 60.
